2017 Police Sport UK Swimming & Water Polo Championships

The 2017 PSUK Swimming & Water Polo Championships were for the first time in my police career hosted by our friends from over the water, Police Service of Northern Ireland. The event was held at the outstanding facility built especially for the 2013 World Police and Fire Games in Bangor. PSNI have for many years travelled to the mainland to take part in the event and it was good to finally see the championships being held on their soil. Garda Siochana, were also invited to take part which added to the friendly competition.

European Masters Swimming Championships 2016

PSUK Swimming Team Have Silver Touch on Home Ground

Ten police swimmers survived the crazy and painful entry process to compete at the European Masters Championships at the Olympic pool in London 24-29th May 2016. Some might say that it was an achievement just to have been there, sharing the fantastic facility with 10,000 swimmers. Who wouldn't want to have an opportunity to swim in such an iconic building in one of the great cities of the world and to follow in the strokes of the likes of Adam Peaty and Fran Hassall who only the week before competed in the same water? PSUK Open Water Championships 2016 - Bedford

This year's competition was held at Box End Park, Bedford. The location was ideal, not far from J13 of the M1 & the facilities first class with changing rooms, café, restaurant & free parking. Saturday 18th June was cold & windy but as the lake is shallow the water was 19 degrees; Vicky Stoughton, Barry Owen & Niki Herbert chose not to wear wetsuits. Following a race briefing the race started at 10.30 with over 100 competitors racing towards the first buoy. Four distances were being swum; 750 m (1 small lap), 1.5km (2 small laps), 3.8km (3 large laps), 5k (4 large laps), all setting off at the same time with some bumping to start with but for most swimmers this eased off after a short while. PSUK had 31 entrants, results are as follows;

Dave 'Ralphy' Briggs Memorial Water polo Tournament 2016

'Ralphy' was Radcliffe born and bred and was soon introduced to Radcliffe swimming club by his mother Freda. As he matured he became the goalkeeper for Radcliffe then the Northwest and British police teams. He has played in many memorable water polo matches including a Gold medal in the World Police and fire games in 1999. One of his finest performances was in the final of the Police National Championships playing for the Northwest police against the Met. The team were 8-0 down at half time and after a serious chat at the end of the quarter the team went on to win the game 9-8, with 'Ralphy' pulling off a string of saves to keep his team in the game. He was a friend to everyone and is sorely missed by those who knew him. The tournament is an annual event and is a fund raiser for Cancer Research UK, to date we have raised £360, so I would ask that you circulate this link to your family and friends and see if we can reach our £400 target.
